ACCIDENTAL DEATH RATE FOR KIDS DROPS 26%
In the past decade, the number of children dying in car wrecks, bike crashes and other accidents has fallen 26%. The increased use of seatbelts and bike helmets is getting a lot of the credit. Injury rates for sports-related activities such as basketball, football and in-line skating are up, the National Safe Kids Campaign reported. "We know that prevention works," says C. Everett Koop, the former general surgeon and current chairman of the campaign. "We can make our world a safer place for future generations to grow up unharmed by the dangers that surround us." Despite the overall decline, accidents remain No. 1 threat to children, killing at four times the rate of cancer, birth defects or homicide.
FDA TRIES TO DOWNPLAY CANCER RISKS FROM RITALIN
When the drug methylphenidate (more commonly known by the brand name "Ritalin") was first introduced 40 years ago drug makers were not required to test to see whether their product could cause cancer. In 1995, as part of its routine testing of older drugs, the National Toxicology Program tested Ritalin. When advised that Ritalin might cause cancer in mice, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) merely shrugged. Their only action was to require Ritalin manufacturer Ciba-Geigy Corp., to add the study's findings to the drug's label and notify doctors of the potential risk. The additional information will be added to the already lengthy description of possible negative side effects associated with the drug.
CAN PERFORMING PERINEAL MASSAGE REALLY REDUCE THE CHANCE THAT YOU'LL NEED AN EPISIOTOMY?
Perineal massage, which involves massaging the back of the vagina to stretch the perineum, can be done daily during the last four weeks of pregnancy and during the first stage of labor. A well-done British study of some 1,000 first-time moms showed that perineal massage during the last three weeks of pregnancy did slightly reduce the incidence of episiotomies and of serious tears to the perineum or anal sphincter. Episiotomies are over-performed today. In fact, if the perineum is permitted to stretch on its own until the baby's head fully crowns, any spontaneous tears that may occur are generally minor.
