THAT MORNING CUP OF STRESS
Researchers at Duke University Medical Center believe that it may be your daily coffee. In a recent study, on one day 72 people replaced their morning coffee with caffeine pills. On another day, they took a placebo. On the caffeine pill days, subjects experienced increased blood pressure and higher levels of stress until as late as 10 p.m. "Adrenaline also increased," says James Lane, Ph.D., one of the researchers. "And while adrenaline can help the body react quickly, it may also contribute to heart damage in the long run." To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, cut back on caffeine, or choose herbal tea, decaf coffee, or juice - they may be better for your heart and could make the stress of your day a little easier to handle.
CONSIDERING A MIDWIFE
A June 1998 study published in the J of Epidemiology and Community Health compared 3.9 million vaginal births delivered by midwife and physicians. The midwives when compared to similar births attended by physicians reported a 19% reduction in infant mortality rate. It was also found that neonatal mortality in the first 28 days was 33% lower if delivered by nurse midwives and the risk of delivering low birth weight babies was 31% lower among the midwives.
BETTER CARE FOR PREMATURE BABIES
Medical science is combating potential complications by developing improved ways to treat and care for underweight and premature babies. "We have become very good at treating them regardless of their birth weight," says Bernard Guyer. Yet despite the improvement in infant death rates, "we still rank pretty poorly" compared to other industrial countries, said Guyer.
WEIGHING THE EVIDENCE
To help you sift through weight-loss companies' claims, more than 40 government agencies, health organizations, and weight-loss companies, including the American Dietetic Association, Weight Watchers International, and Jenny Craig, have formed the Partnership for Healthy Weight Management. The group has compiled a list of information that companies should provide to potential clients, including staff qualifications, cost, health risks, and long-term success rates.
